Light Resonance, 2026

LIGHT RESONANCE, MONTSALVAT ARTS CENTRE, 2026

Light Resonance was an exhibition I curated consisting of five abstract painters: Christopher Carmody, Emma Beer, Spencer Harrison, Fu-On Chung and Natalie Mather. Connected by our process-driven painting practices, and preoccupations with behaviours of light and colour, the five of us arrive via different pathways to investigate the vibrance of colour. Some via tone and pigment, some via digital explorations of light, and some by painting the way light affects objects.
Interpreted two ways, light resonance refers to a phenomenon of visual vibration known as ‘chromostereopsis’, that occurs when two colours similar in tone -- relative lightness -- sit next to one another. It also refers to the feeling when ideas amongst people connect, a feeling that resonates lightly -- or deeply.

For this exhibition, I embarked upon a painting series that had been percolating in my head for months, if not years. My painting practice often marries speculative architectures and impossible geographies through density and palimpsest. For this series, I pared back my painting language to preserve a sense of tension and diffusion: in each painting, form braces, gathers and disperses, almost like breath.
