COMMISSIONS & COMMERCIAL PROJECTS: FAQ
A painting commission I completed in 2022, hung in its apartment home.
I LOVE COMMISSIONS.
I love them. I mean it. I love collaborating on a vision: whether that’s a painting for your home, a commercial or public project, or a small and intimate piece for a private celebration. I am open to possibility, and can always find an outcome that suits anyone’s budget, because I believe art is for everyone.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Step 1: Email me. Whether you have a space, an idea, a work of mine you already love, or no clue where to start, that’s okay. We’ll make a time to chat and I can put together a commission proposal for you based on your needs and constraints. This will include budget, dimensions and agreed timeframe.
Step 2: You pay a deposit. Generally this is 30%, but it’s negotiable and varies from project to project.
Step 3: I begin your commission!
Step 4: When the commission is about halfway towards being complete, I send you a progress report. If we’re mutually happy with the progress, you pay another 30% midway through the project.
Step 5: I complete your commission, making any final adjustments according to your notes.
Step 6: Your commission is carefully delivered upon receipt of your final 40% of the commission fee.
FAQS
How long does it take?
Typically 8-12 weeks depending on scale and my exhibition schedule. Rush requests may be possible for an additional fee. Mural commissions take 2-4 weeks for development and painting on-site.
WHAT CAN I COMMISSION?
I am open to anything! Paintings, drawings, collages and murals are most common; but patterns or images for products or public work are exciting, as are illustrations and clothing — bring me your passion projects and let’s see if we can work together!
How much do commissions cost?
Prices vary by size, complexity, and medium, but most private commissions range between AUD $1,000–$6,000. Framing and shipping are quoted separately. Don’t let this deter you — whatever your budget, I would love to work with you.
Can I request specific imagery or colours?
You’re welcome to share references, spaces the work will hang in, or palette preferences. However, all commissions are interpreted through my own visual language and style — I don’t produce literal or purely decorative reproductions.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes, flexible instalment options are available for most commissions (see above workflow for an example).
Can I reproduce the artwork (e.g. for a book or product)?
All artworks remain © Natalie Mather. Reproduction rights are not included unless otherwise negotiated in writing.
